Steven Smith continues research on membrane and amyloid proteins. Two BSB graduate students joined the lab, Andreyah Pope and Omar Sanchez-Reyes. Andreyah was a chemistry undergraduate at Stony Brook and has been in the lab for several years, while Omar comes from Mexico City. Both are working on the mechanism by which G protein-coupled receptors signal. Elliot Crooks and Allen Chen joined the lab in January and have been working on the amyloid projects in the lab, trying to understand the structural differences between amyloid in plaques associated with Alzheimer’s disease and amyloid bound to blood vessels in the brain, which is associated with cerebral amyloid angiopathy. Elliot is a biochemistry undergraduate and Allen is a first year medical student. Steve continues as the Director of Structural Biology at Stony Brook.
